For Visitors

You will always be welcome to join us in worship at Edgebrook Community Church!

Following is some information that we hope will help you feel comfortable and familiar with ECC when you get here:

Location
Edgebrook Community Church, United Church of Christ, is located at 6736 North Loleta Avenue, Chicago, Illinois 60646; 773-763-1522.  We are in the Edgebrook neighborhood on the northwest side of Chicago, very close to the Niles and Skokie border, in the triangle made by Touhy, Caldwell, and Lehigh Avenues.  You can find us by taking Hiawatha off of Lehigh or Touhy, or Loleta off of Caldwell (look for our signs). There is a small map on our home page to help you locate us.  Our services are at 10:00 a.m.  You can park on Hiawatha or Loleta Streets in front of the church, or there is also a church parking lot in the back, which is accessed from Hiawatha.  The main entrance to the church faces Hiawatha.

Accessibility
Our church is handicapped accessible.  We have a wheelchair lift at the front door to bring you up to the sanctuary level, accessible washrooms on the first floor, and there are wheelchair-accessible pew areas.  If you will need the wheelchair lift you can call ahead to let us know at 773-763-1522, or you can just show up and we will be happy to accommodate you. Our Sanctuary has audio amplification for the hearing impaired - just ask for a hearing assist device when you arrive.  We also offer Large-Print Bulletins.

Arrival
When you arrive, there will be a greeter at the door who will welcome you, give you a bulletin for the service, and direct you to our sanctuary.  You are welcome to sit wherever you are comfortable.  There is also a coat closet just off the sanctuary entrance for your convenience. What do people wear?  We don't have a "dress code" at ECC – folks wear what they feel comfortable in, from jeans to a coat and tie – so you are welcome to come as you are. (Though on Easter Sunday, there are sure to be plenty of children dressed in their Easter best!)

Sunday School and Nursery
Children stay in the service with their parents from the beginning, until the Pastor holds a special "Time for Children" with them.  After this, the children go with the Sunday School teachers and our Nursery Care personnel to Sunday School or nursery care, just down the hall. However, children of all ages are welcome to stay in the service with their parents if they would prefer. We do have a windowed room at the back of the sanctuary where a parent can sit with their child and still see and hear the service, if that makes the parent more comfortable, but we absolutely welcome having children in the sanctuary during the service, noisy or not!

Our Service
We follow a service that contains many elements which would be familiar to people from many different Christian and Catholic backgrounds. We celebrate Communion once a month, usually on the first Sunday of the month.  Our communion is open, which means that anyone who joins us in worship is invited to take communion with us. After the elements are consecrated, we pass a plate with bread and then a tray with little cups of wine or grape juice to the people in the pews, and we take communion as a group while in the pews.

Music
And we have beautiful music during the service!  We cherish our Aoelian Skinner organ, which is used most Sundays, and our choir.  Our music is a blend of classical, traditional, spiritual, contemporary, and other elements. During the service, we also sing two or three hymns as a congregation, again mixing traditional and contemporary, from the hymn books in the pews.

Coffee Time and Fellowship
After the service, we invite you to walk down the short hallway with us to the Heritage Room, which is our gathering room.  It was last redecorated in the '70s, so its cheerful burnt-orange plaid carpeting will beckon you from afar!  In this cozy room we have a time for coffee, coffeecake, and conversation. The nursery and Sunday school rooms adjoin this larger room, so you will find your children there also. We would love to have you join us for fellowship after the service.

Any more questions?  Just give us a call – 773-763-1522 – so we can give you any more information you need.  We look forward to seeing you on Sunday!

About the United Church of Christ

Thank you for your interest in Edgebrook Community Church. We are part of the United Church of Christ (UCC), which is made up of approximately 6000 congregations nationwide with about 1.5 million members.

A merger between the Evangelical Reformed and Congregational Christian churches (all four denominations have deep and significant roots in European and American church history) in 1957 gave birth to the present United Church of Christ. Our motto "That they may all be one" is Jesus' prayer for the unity of the church. The UCC continues to be a united and uniting church in its ecumenical quest.

The UCC is one of the most diverse Christian churches in the United States. Each congregation of the UCC is free to determine its own programs, priorities, method of worship and expression of faith. Yet we see our congregations as existing in covenant with nearly 6,000 other congregations across the country, and with mission partnerships around the world.

The UCC respects freedom of individual conscience. There are no tests of faith binding our members to a particular doctrine or belief. While affirming the historic Christian faith, we nevertheless believe we must renew this faith with each generation.

Follow this link to the UCC website, www.ucc.org, for further information regarding our denomination's message and mission.

Our church embraces the UCC Stillspeaking Initiative, which is designed to speak to the alienated and those seeking a spiritual home. No matter who you are, no matter where you are on life's journey, you are welcome here.
